Anti-Gravity Treadmill

An anti-gravity treadmill is a specialized type of treadmill that uses technology to reduce the impact of gravity on a person’s body while they walk or run. This allows users to exercise with reduced stress on their joints, muscles, and bones. An anti-gravity treadmill, like the AlterG, offers several unique benefits by using air pressure technology to reduce the impact of body weight during walking or running.

Key benefits

  • Reduced impact on joints: Minimizes stress on knees, hips, ankles, and spine—ideal for post-surgical rehab or joint issues (e.g. arthritis).
  • Safe return to activity: Athletes recovering from injuries (ACL tears, stress fractures, tendinopathies etc.) can begin running earlier without full body weight strain.
  • Controlled loading: Allows therapists to gradually increase weight-bearing as the patient progresses.
  • Maintain cardiovascular fitness: Athletes can run with less impact, reducing risk of overuse injuries while maintaining endurance.

  • Form training: Ability to focus on proper gait and running mechanics without the burden of full weight.

  • Over-speed training: Athletes can safely train at speeds beyond their normal capacity, improving stride turnover and neuromuscular efficiency.
  • Low-impact exercise for overweight users: Reduces strain on joints, making exercise more accessible and sustainable.

  • Encourages adherence: Users can walk or jog comfortably for longer periods, improving consistency.
  • Support for patients with conditions like Parkinson’s, MS, or stroke recovery: Provides stability, reduces fear of falling, and helps retrain movement.
  • Confidence boost: Allows users to move more freely and confidently in a supported environment.
  • Precision control: Users can walk or run at 20% to 100% of their body weight in 1% increments – highly customizable for any fitness or rehab level.
  • Improved motivation: Users often feel encouraged by being able to move pain-free or at higher performance levels than possible on the ground.

  • Faster recovery perception: Seeing and feeling progress earlier can support a more positive recovery mindset.

How It Works

The most well-known version, like the AlterG
Anti-Gravity Treadmill, uses air pressure technology:

1. The user wears specially designed shorts and zips into an airtight chamber that surrounds the lower body.

2. The treadmill fills with air, creating upward pressure that lifts part of the user’s body weight.

3. Users can adjust the body weight support from 100% (full body weight) down to as low as 20%, in small increments.

Common Uses

  • Physical therapy clinics
  • Sports medicine centers
  • Elite athletic training facilities
