Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is a medical treatment where one breathes pure oxygen in a pressurized chamber. The pressure in the chamber is set to set to 1.5 times the normal atmospheric pressure. This allows your lungs to take in more oxygen than usual, which can then be carried by the blood to help heal damaged tissues, fight infection, and promote overall health. Under pressure, increased amounts of oxygen are transferred into the plasma of your blood, which allows tissue to heal that normally would not be able to achieve higher levels of oxygen concentration.

How It Works

Increased Oxygen Delivery:

When you’re breathing pure oxygen under high pressure, the oxygen dissolves into the bloodstream at much higher levels than what can be achieved at normal atmospheric pressure.

Healing Tissue Repair:

The increased oxygen levels help to enhance the body’s natural healing processes. This is especially useful for tissues that are damaged or deprived of oxygen due to injury or certain medical conditions.

Infection Control:

High oxygen levels can inhibit the growth of anaerobic bacteria (those that thrive without oxygen) and promote the function of white blood cells, which can help fight infections.

Key benefits

  • Chronic Wounds: HBOT is highly effective in treating chronic wounds, especially those that have been resistant to other treatments, like diabetic foot ulcers, pressure sores, and non-healing surgical wounds.

  • Promotes Tissue Repair: The increased oxygen levels stimulate the production of collagen, a key component in wound healing, and improve the formation of new blood vessels (angiogenesis).
  • Anti-inflammatory Effects: Oxygen at high pressure can reduce swelling and inflammation in tissues, which helps with conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, traumatic brain injury (TBI), and other inflammatory conditions.

  • Helps with Soft Tissue Injury: It’s often used by athletes to help speed up recovery from injuries, sprains, and strains by reducing inflammation.
  • Improved Blood Flow: Since HBOT increases oxygen saturation, it enhances circulation and allows more oxygen to reach tissues that are deprived of oxygen, such as in cases of peripheral artery disease or strokes.

  • Boosting Immune Function: Higher oxygen levels help white blood cells function more effectively in fighting infections.
  • Antibacterial and Antifungal Effects: Oxygen-rich environments inhibit the growth of anaerobic bacteria (bacteria that grow without oxygen) and can even help treat infections that are resistant to antibiotics, like gangrene or some chronic infections.

  • Promotes White Blood Cell Function: Higher oxygen levels stimulate the function of white blood cells, which are essential for fighting infections.
  • Neurological Healing: Studies suggest that HBOT can aid in the recovery of brain function after events like stroke, traumatic brain injury (TBI), or even post-concussion syndrome by increasing oxygen supply to brain cells, stimulating repair, and reducing inflammation.

  • Helps with Memory and Focus: Some research indicates that it might improve cognitive function, memory, and focus, particularly after brain injury.
  • Post-Radiation Therapy: Patients who’ve undergone radiation therapy for cancer can experience long-term tissue damage (like in the skin, bones, and soft tissues). HBOT can help reduce these effects, promote healing, and regenerate damaged tissues.
  • Faster Recovery from Exercise: Athletes use HBOT to speed up recovery times after intense training or competition by reducing muscle fatigue and promoting quicker tissue regeneration.

  • Enhanced Endurance: Some studies suggest that it could improve endurance by increasing the oxygen availability in muscles during physical activity.
  • Increased Oxygenation to Brain: There is evidence suggesting that HBOT can improve mental clarity, focus, and overall cognitive function by delivering more oxygen to the brain. Some users report feeling more alert and mentally sharp after therapy.
  • Multiple Sclerosis (MS): While research is still ongoing, some studies suggest that HBOT might offer benefits for people with autoimmune conditions like MS by reducing inflammation and promoting nervous system healing.
  • Diver’s Disease: HBOT is a standard treatment for decompression sickness, which occurs when a diver surfaces too quickly, causing nitrogen bubbles to form in the bloodstream. The therapy helps to reduce these bubbles and minimize the damage they cause.
