Dr E. Lourens graduated from Stellenbosch Medical School in 2014. After completion of her internship and community service years, she worked for 4-years as a medical officer at a district hospital in the Eastern Cape as the head of the out-patients department until November 2021.

She started her postgraduate qualification in Sport and Exercise Medicine through the University of Pretoria in 2020.

Her interest in sport started at a very young age. She competed as a middle and long-distance runner at provincial and national level. Exercise and healthy living still form an integral part of her lifestyle.

She relocated to Gauteng in December 2021. She consequently completed a fellowship in Sport and Exercise Medicine in December 2022 under the guidance of Prof. J. Patricios and is currently practicing as a qualified Sports and Exercise Medicine Physician at Waterfall Sport and Orthopaedic Surgery. Dr Lourens has a special interest in women’s health and mental health and its’ place in the field of sport and exercise medicine.

She acted as the team doctor of the New Zealand Women’s Cricket Team during the inaugural U/19 Women’s ICC Cricket World Cup in January 2023. Since then, she served as the team doctor for New Zealand Cricket for both male and female teams on a regular basis. In 2024 she travelled with the White Ferns to the ICC T20 Cricket World Cup in 2024 where they were crowned as champions.

She strives to keep updated with the latest developments in sport and exercise medicine. She attended to Women’s Cricket Science, Medicine and Leadership Conference held in February 2023 as well as the Biennial Female Athlete Conference in June 2023 and 2025 hosted by the Wu Tsai Female Athlete Program in Boston, America.
