Dr Warren Matthee was born in Johannesburg and attended Jeppe High School for Boys. He studied medicine at the University of the Witwatersrand, obtaining his MB BCh in 2001. He completed his internship at Tygerberg Hospital in the Western Cape and his community service at Sebokeng Hospital in Vereeniging, working exclusively in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery.

He then travelled to the United Kingdom to begin his formal surgical training. He spent two and a half years in Bath and completed rotations in orthopaedic surgery, otorhinolaryngology and general surgery, working in hospitals in both England and Wales. During this time, he completed the British examinations and fulfilled all clinical requirements to become a full member of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2007.

On returning to South Africa, Dr Matthee worked in the Intensive Care Unit at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital before commencing his specialist training in orthopaedic surgery through the University of the Witwatersrand. He qualified as a Fellow of the College of Orthopaedic Surgeons of South Africa in 2011. In 2012, he completed a full-time Specialist Fellowship in Knee Surgery, focusing on arthroplasty and arthroscopic joint ligament reconstruction, under the mentorship of Dr Ponky Firer at the Linksfield Clinic in Johannesburg. He later spent a year working alongside Dr Glen Vardi at the Rosebank Clinic, furthering his expertise in knee surgery, and also gained valuable experience in shoulder and joint replacement surgery under Dr Charles Breckon at Morningside Clinic. His research culminated in the awarding of a Master of Medicine degree in Orthopaedic Surgery in 2013.

Dr Matthee has been in private practice since 2012 and consults at Netcare Waterfall Hospital in Midrand. While treating a wide range of general orthopaedic conditions, his main areas of interest are sports-related injuries, joint ligament reconstruction and arthroscopic procedures of the knee and shoulder. He also performs trauma surgery, regularly covering the casualty departments at both Waterfall and Sunninghill hospitals. He is fully registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa and is a member of the South African Knee Society (SAKS), the South African Orthopaedic Association (SAOA) and the South African Society for Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (SASES). In recent years, he has worked closely with Supersport United Football Club, performing many of the team’s surgical procedures.

Dr Matthee lives in Sandton with his wife, Faye, and their two sons, Jordan and Connor. An avid runner, he has completed six Comrades Marathons, three Two Oceans Marathons and the London Marathon, with his best Comrades time being eight hours and eleven minutes. He has also taken part in the 94.7 Cycle Challenge twice, enjoys going to the gym, and occasionally plays golf. In 2018, he fulfilled a lifelong dream by obtaining his private pilot’s licence.
